Joey Hernandez
Bio
Joseph A. Hernandez from Chicago, IL, began his formal training at Western Michigan University, where he graduated magna cum laude with a BFA in Dance. He received supplemental training from programs at Springboard Danse Montréal, Alonzo King LINES Ballet, San Francisco Conservatory of Dance, Luna Negra Dance Theater, and Gus Giordano Dance School. Joseph’s professional credits include The Metropolitan Opera Ballet, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Amy Seiwert’s Imagery, LED Boise, ODC/Dance, Kate Weare Company, Wellspring/Cori Terry & Dancers, River North Dance Chicago, and the Broadway production of West Side Story performed in Chicago and Italy.
As an educator, Joey draws from his diverse performance career, integrating release and Limon techniques, jazz, hip hop, and contemporary ballet. His class flows with athletic and sensually lush movement, emphasizing individuality, technical exploration, mindful risk-taking, and the motivation to challenge one’s own limiting values. Joseph has been on faculty at Hubbard Street Dance Center, The Chicago High School for the Arts, and taught company class for Amy Seiwert’s Imagery, LED Boise, and DanceWorks Chicago. His choreography has been formally presented at the NYC Blueprint Dance Festival, College of DuPage Choreography Showcase and Competition, DanceChance, Hot Crowd, DanceWorks Chicago, COMMON Conservatory, Trifecta Dance Festival, Midwest RAD Festival, and Western Michigan University.
